Rallus elegans  King Rail
These ground-nesting crustacean predators and insectivores are common in rice fields, including those fields near the Red River in Natchitoches Parish. King Rails also occur extensively in the Barataria Bay area in Jefferson Parish.

Rallus longirostris  Clapper Rail
Probably all of these ground-nesting crustacean predators breed in the tidal salt marshes along the coast. The Clapper Rail is on the Audubon WatchList for Louisiana.

Porphyrula martinica  Purple Gallinule
These reed-nesting omnivores nest in large areas of emergent, noncultivated, aquatic vegetation primarily near the coast but also in the Mississippi/Red River Region.
