Those of us who feed birds may misinterpret large numbers of yard birds as indicating bird populations are steady or increasing.  But bird feeders attract a small sample of the birds in a region.  Feeders can supply seeds, grains, blocks of fat, or sugar water - but many birds eat other things. Birds that depend on more perishable items, for example fruit, live insects, spiders, carrion, other birds, and other vertebrates (e.g., fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals) are less likely to come to bird feeders.  If kingfishers, ducks, or owls decline in numbers, you would not notice the trend by watching feeder birds.
