Perhaps more ofthen than not, wetland birds occur in flocks.  Flocking helps birds find wetlands, many of which occur on small tracts separated by larger expanses of dry land. Flocks don’t necessarily indicate healthy populations.  Wetland bird populations are well below historic levels.  Several species of wetland birds nearly went extinct in the early 1900s owing to overhunting and drainage of wetlands.  As of lately, several species have benefitted from conservation programs that have restored wetlands. “Duck Stamps” and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act have generated billions of dollars and protected nearly 30 million acres in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.  It is undeniable that hunting for ducks and geese has benefitted shorebirds, gallinules, cranes, certain sparrows, owls, and many other species.  But wetlands are under attack in some ways not yet appreciated by the public.  Did know know that flushing old drugs may affect hormones of wetland animals? Are you aware that 1/3 or more of frogs are perhaps other amphibians are threatened by a fungus which may be gaining a foothold as the earth's climate changes?  Did you know that several herons and egrets depend on frogs?  Biodiversity is a network far greater than the telecommunication companies have erected but like any network, the network is susceptible to failures.
