Many northern species of birds (and a few "Austral migrants" in the southern hemisphere) migrate to or through tropical latitudes after breeding.  They are tropical birds, in a sense, in part because their non-breeding season can be as long as their breeding season.  Permanently tropical birds, whose breeding distributions generally do not extend north of the Tropic of Cancer or south of the Tropic of Capricorn, are to be looked for in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Florida and other southern states.  The American tropics comprise about 3/4 of the Neotropical Realm or region.  Neotropical countries include the United States (only thanks to southern Florida, Puerto Rico, and the like), Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaraugua, Costa Rica, Panama, island nations of the West Indies (forming an arc that defines the Caribbean Sea) and countries of South America.  The latter is known as the bird continent because more species occur in South America than in any other continent.  In many ways, Central America and the West Indies are nearly as phenomenal for bird diversity as South America.  Several Central American countries (even Mexico, half of which lies north of the Tropic of Cancer) have more birds than Canada and the lower 48 states combined.
