Texas is a popular destination for birders seeking new "life-birds", especially U.S. citizens and those of us on a tight budget.  The official state check-lists of Texas and California each may surpass 650 bird species in the next decade or so.  Several state runner-ups lag far behind Texas and California with about 500 or fewer species.  Situated in the central United States, Texas is within vagrant zones for eastern U.S. species, western ones, northern visitors, and Mexican species.  Its long coastline attracts a fair number of sea birds, numerous shore birds, and several marsh dwellers.  The deserts, grasslands, piney woods, and deciduous forests beckon birds of all kinds.  The Rio Grande valley is the top attraction for birders from other states but Big Bend National Park boasts more species than any other U.S. national park.

Another hawk, again not a Zone-tailed, but instead a Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk...

ID'd from video recorded hours after the event (morning of 29 November 2008)

not a Zone-tailed Hawk, not a Red-tail, and not even a Harlan's Red-tail...

Instead, it was an immature White-tailed Hawk at Mitchell Lake, San Antonio, TX

ID'd by MMS from video shot 3 days earlier (3 May 2008) during the Audubon Sanctuary's Bird-a-thon!

The 4th really southern flycatcher reported for Texas in 3 months

This long-billed kingbird species normally occurs in the West Indies and Central and South America.

This species of duck is tropical, too, occurring in Texas primarily during wet years.
